ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: When I went in, I only had 55p in change (I also had two twenty pound notes as I'd just been to the cash machine. I tend usually to take out only thirty pounds, but the cash machine didn't have any ten pound notes, so I had the choice of either twenty or forty pounds). When I asked the guy how much a Twirl was, he said "59p" but when I feigned counting my change and pretended to discover I only had 55p, he asked how much I had and when I told him, he accepted that. It had never occured to me before to haggle for Twirls. This changes everything.
I wonder how low he would have gone. 53p? 51? You should have said, 'I have twelvepence,' just to test his mettle.
ReplyDeleteWell, as you'd know by now, 55p is a perfectly reasonable price for a Twirl, so I was happy with that. I didn't want to abuse his generosity of spirit.
